The cornea is the transparent, dome-shaped front surface of the eye. It plays an important role in focusing light and maintaining clear vision. When the cornea becomes severely damaged, scarred, swollen or diseased, glasses or contact lenses may not provide sufficient visual improvement.
A cornea transplant, also called keratoplasty, involves replacing some or all of the unhealthy corneal tissue with healthy donor tissue. The type of transplant depends largely on which layers of the cornea are affected.
Modern corneal surgery can sometimes replace only the diseased layer rather than the entire cornea. This can reduce the amount of tissue transplanted and may offer advantages for suitable patients.

Penetrating Keratoplasty (PK)
Penetrating keratoplasty is a full-thickness corneal transplant. In this procedure, the surgeon removes the affected central portion of the cornea and replaces it with healthy donor corneal tissue.

Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK)
DALK replaces the diseased anterior layers of the cornea while preserving the patient's healthy inner endothelial layer.

Endothelial Keratoplasty
Endothelial keratoplasty replaces the unhealthy inner endothelial layer of the cornea while leaving most of the patient's corneal tissue intact.
May be considered when: the endothelium is damaged or not functioning properly.
DSEK / DSAEK
A thin layer containing donor endothelial cells and supporting tissue is transplanted into the eye to replace dysfunctional endothelial tissue.
DMEK
DMEK uses an even thinner donor tissue layer containing the endothelium and Descemet's membrane. It is a highly specialised form of endothelial transplantation.

The goal of endothelial procedures is to treat the unhealthy inner layer while preserving as much of the patient's own cornea as possible.
